ACCC Calls for Public Comment on Egg Standards

The Humane Society International has lodged a series of complaints with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and last week they responded to the complaint regarding Egg Corporation's application for a Certification Trade Mark that would allow egg producers to run 20,000 or more hens per hectare and call it free range. Currently Australian free range farmers allow 1,500 birds per hectare.

ACCC have held up the application while they seek public comment and have made it very clear that the main factor in their decision will be consumer expectation. Our job now is to let ACCC know that 20,000 hens per hectare is unacceptable to consumers and small producers alike and, of course, the chickens.

I am asking you today to help ACCC make the right decision. Please note that the below document will guide you on how to make comment and the points that need to be covered.  We only have until the 20th of June to submit so I am urging you to make your voice be heard. If we lose this one, then the future of free range farming in Australia will be very bleak.

Please help us get over this final hurdle and give a clear message to our Government and the industry that it is unacceptable for Egg Corporation to move the goal posts to suit the large industrial producers, and that you support stocking densities of 1,500 birds per hectare as currently outlined in the Model Code of Practice for the keeping of free range layer hens. Please also pass this on to friends and family. We need all the help we can get on this one.
